Statements
Shepherd was a free black watchman who was killed by one of John Brown's men during the raid on Harper's Ferry. Although Shepherd was free, the United Daughters of the Confederacy erected a “Faithful Slave Memorial" in his honor, inspiring protracted criticism from white and black activists
