To begin with it operated a cattle mill, then in 1752 a private act was passed to allow Thomas Hope Elletson to build a water mill which was constructed in 1758. The estate was surveyed by William Smellie and James Sheriff in 1782 by which point 682 acres had been added to the est / reference
