The first reference to the Morgan Lewis estate (named after the owner, Morgan Lewis) appears to be in 1674. By 1721 it was owned by John Hannis. By 1736 it was in the possession of the Gibbons family. In 1760 Sir William Gibbons bequeathed the plantation to his son John Gibbons. In turn, in 1777, John Gibbons (by then, Sir John Gibbons, 2nd Bart) bequeathed the plantation to his son Scawan Kenrick
Gibbons. For 1787 and subsequently see Evolutions.
