Jeremiah Daniel Baltimore
Free before 13th Amendment. Baltimore was an inventor, machinist, and engineer who improved the steam boiler and was apprenticed at the Washington navy yards until driven away by harassment. He later opened a repair shop, was chief engineer/mechanic for Freedman's Hospital in D.C. and taught metalworking. Invented the pyrometer.
