Free before 13th Amendment. A Quaker, Cuffee was associated with the Colonization Society of America and supported the return to Africa of free African_Americans. In 1815 he sailed fo Sierra Leone with 38 African Americans who planned to settle there. This was the first, black-initiated "back to Africa" effort in U.S. history.
