Stephen Spencer Hill
Born Enslaved. Free before 13th Amendment. Though emancipated, Hill, who had successfully prospected for gold, was legally re-enslaved after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and a ruling proceeding in California denied that he had been free. Imprisoned and bound to be returned to slavery in Arkansas, he escaped again but then disappears from the known historical record.
