Enslaved. Free before 13th Amendment. A shoemaker and farmer who unsuccessfully tried to leave his property to a woman named Violet, who was denied access due to her enslaved status. His epitaph, written by Daniel Bliss, a Tory and Harvard-educated lawyer, became famous.
