Born Enslaved. The leading African American figure of the late 19th and early 20th Century. Author of Up from Slavery and founder of Tuskegee Institute. Urged southern black people to accommodate to social segrgation and concentrate on economic self-advancement, a position that came to be challenged by W.E.B. Du Bois. .
