Enslaved. Free before 13th Amendment. Robin Holmes sued in Oregon for the freedom of his still-enslaved children, winning the case in 13 July 1853 on the grounds that Oregon had no law specifically allowing slavery (nevertheless, his eldest daughter was not returned to him).
